Isabel Marant for H&M: The Full Collection

Isabel Marant for H&M

Photo: H&M

H&M did it again. Their latest designer collaboration is with Isabel Marant, and it does not disappoint with its tie-dye skinny pants, cropped boucle jackets, men-style double -breasted jackets and fringe boots.

“I aim at creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: you dress up but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy,” she said in a release first announcing her collaboration with H&M in June. “The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude.”

Marant is in good company with other designers with cult-like followings to collaborate with H&M, such as Stella McCartney, Marni, Karl Lagerfeld, Lanvin, Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Maison Martin Margiela.

But these collections do sell out as soon as they hit the sales floor, so you will need a game plan come November 14th, when Marant’s collection hits the stores!

Which piece are you getting from the Marant H&M collection?

Alexandre Herchcovitch Spring 2014 Show

Early on the evening of September 7th, Alexandre Herchcovitch showed a Spring 14 collection that balanced lights and darks, explored through the airy fragility of smoky-eyed models and crescendos of strings and pianos.

Born in Sao Paulo, Herchcovitch has credited his cosmopolitan upbringing for supplying him with a global perspective on style. Still, the Brazilian designer’s viewpoint has always been uniquely his own. Since launching in 1994, his groundbreaking collections have included avant-garde takes on sequins, rubber and wild patterning. Last time around, he imagined women as flowers with designs that expanded from minimalistic ruffled petals of peplum to fantastical floral-printed veils.

But for this season, themes were less botanical. A series of black dresses were accented with thin, widely-spaced pinstripes; others featured feathery jackets with unfilled sleeves fluttering off the shoulders like angel wings; some were spiked with leather swaths and extraneous zippers. Herchcovitch’s colors were minimalist: black and white (including many zebra patterns, so the wild kingdom was not completely abandoned, after all) and a late burst of brilliant, metallic-sheened purple.

Rebecca Taylor Spring 2014 Show

Rebecca Taylor is known for her ultra-feminine wares, and at times she stayed the course, offering crystal embellishments (which, truth be told, often felt a bit much), flippy little dresses, and fields of floral prints inspired by pressed flowers. “I really love a floral, but I think it’s important to present it in a modern way,” she said. The designer achieved this on the runway, showing soft pink petals on a sweet hoodie (worn under a tactile rubberized terry bomber in tan), as well as a relaxed top-to-toe floral suit.

Supplementing Taylor’s girlish signatures was a new sporty coolness. Referencing nineties street wear, the designer turned out perforated leather (which was particularly appealing as a double zipper-front baby blue shift) and lots of mesh. Sometimes, those elements were juxtaposed with ladylike lace, which appeared on the lapels of vests and bombers, and, on one occasion, as a mid-length white skirt.

The crop top, it would seem, continues to reign, and it turned up here in the form of zebra-print sweatshirts, floral organdy tees, and chunky cropped sweaters (worn atop crisp blouses). In an attractive example of layering, a brocade mini-top was shown over a geometric voile cutwork shirt and paired with easy white trousers. Less appealing were the engineer denims, which, sometimes accented with pink zippers, read a bit too Railroad Barbie. All in all, however, Taylor’s Spring collection felt youthful, light, and embraced the “fresh beauty” she aimed to create.

Mara Hoffman Spring 2014 Show

Mara Hoffman SS14

SS14 MARA HOFFMAN INVITE

I love going to Mara Hoffman’s shows. I always know I’ll be entertained. A house remix of the Banana Boat song started playing and the show opened to a psychedelic printed tunic and pant set with a graphic of serpents wrapped all around. Suddenly we were all transported to an isolated Polynesian island where sculpted women strutted around in ponytail extensions, rainbow-colored clothing and everyone knew how to have fun. Other standouts in the lineup included a low-cut sheer tunic and capris with an all over print of neon colored eyes and a two-headed serpent as a belt and a flowing sleeveless bright coral maxi dress with geometric prints and triangular cutouts at the midriff (my personal favorite). She also showed sheer embellished caftans, tie-dyed jumpsuits, and knitted intarsia ponchos. Hoffman’s aesthetic is anything if not playful.

Trends: Jazz Age Style In Full Swing

Gatsby Style
Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington made their first recordings, Prohibition was in full effect, people danced the Charleston, and a new novel called The Great Gatsby was published. The great excesses of the 20s came about after the end of the Great War and people simply wanted to live again. Those who could afford it lived life with a vengeance. The era was perhaps best summed up by American journalist Heywood Broun when he said, “The Jazz Age was wicked and monstrous and silly. Unfortunately, I had a good time.”

As Baz Luhrman’s modernist take on America’s favorite novel opens in theaters this week, here is our take on how to step out like it’s 1925.

Goti Silver Chain Leather Necklace
LAYERED NECKLACE
Instead of long strands of delicately handknotted pearls, rhinestone chokers or beaded necklaces that are so quintessentially 1920s, we opted for Riccardo Goti’s bold jewelry with its beautifully disheveled and intricate detailing. The designer mixes leather with sterling silver hardware that produces his distinctive urban style. Each handcrafted piece has its own identity and a worn, vintage feel.

Vera Wang Satin Coat

EVENING COAT
Every self-respecting Jazz-era party-goer should have an evening coat for cool nights out in the metropolis or the countryside. Here is a very elegant satin evening coat with handpainted, beaded embellishments and fully lined in silk by Vera Wang.

Cavender Knitted Mesh Cuff

ARM CANDY
Whether made of leather, metal or hemp, cuffs are the perfect way to accessorize a sleeveless silk summer dress. Here’s one version: a wrap cuff handcrafted with antique silver metal knitted mesh that is reminiscent of the opulent Jazz Age.

Afterwear Sandwashed Silk ChemiseAfterwear Silk Jersey Lace Set

UNDERGARMENTS
Mustn’t forget what goes underneath. Whether it’s lace, silk jersey or chiffon, it’s what you don’t see that really determines how comfortable (translation = confident) you feel.

Ambika Laceup Crochet Swimsuit

BEACH WEAR
Perhaps the greatest shift in fashion sensibilities over the years has been made in swimwear. The sexual revolution has made way for the emergence of beach coverings that is much less modest than the heavy wool skirts and tank suits of the 20’s. But you don’t have to give up the glamour and excitement of the era with vintage-inspired swimsuits such as Ambika’s handknitted crochet one-piece with its black and white stripe pattern and lace-up front panel– just the unnecessary fabric.

Lloyd 1888 Russell Dress Boot

THE SPECTATOR SHOE
It was a pair just like these hand-finished brogue ankle boots from Lloyd’s 1888 Collection that Jay Gatsby would have worn with his signature white flannel suit. Featuring a fine calf leather upper that is naturally tanned giving it a glossy, antique patina and fine details such as a perforated Budapest pattern on a narrow squared toe and an elasticized gusset, these handmade boots recall a time where elegance and beauty endured.

Persol Reflex Series PO3046S

ROUND SPECTACLES
Thick, round and heavy horn-rimmed frames were predominant in the twenties. Now you can have the same look without the weight. Inspired by vintage cameras, Persol’s new Reflex Edition series is remarkably lightweight with a distinctly retro round lens shape. Of course like every Persol pair, these also feature the signature monoblock arrow hinges and Meflecto technology they are famously known for.

Ermenegildo Zegna Mother of Pearl Cufflinks

CUFFLINKS
It’s all about the details and every champagne-filled gala needs a pair of silver cufflinks. Take these Rhodium-plated sterling silver ball cufflinks with Mother of Pearl inlay by Ermenegildo Zegna. See more cufflinks.

We’re Mad About: Ambika Bikini

Ambika moved to New York from Australia over ten years ago to embark on a career in fashion photography. During her downtime during photo shoots Ambika began crocheting bikinis. The teeny bikinis were an instant hit with friends and models alike. And so Ambika Bikini was born. These form-fitting bikinis have graced the covers of Sports Illustrated and Maxim just to name a few.

The rainy afternoon setting of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Fall 2013 show was a town house on the Upper East Side, produced by Bureau Betak which they designed with antique furniture and the everyday objects of a life fabulously lived. This season design duo designed much of their own fabrics and you could say that they are a little obsessed with the details… which they’re now using to designing for a life beyond the office and the cocktail party (afterall, there’s so much more to life).

The Edwardian influence in the overall feel of the collection was both effortless cool and exquisite minimalism down to the last detail. Asian techniques were abound in each look from the kimono wrap coats, satin obi belts, dresses layered over pants and origami folds of intricate silk jacquard. I have my eye on the jacquard wrap jacket in Look 10 and the oversized cashmere fisherman’s sweater that looks so cozy I could literally sleep in it.

THE BLONDS – A/W 2013
This season’s show was Old Hollywood meets Norman Bates. Each look was inspired by cult icons from horror films. The standout is definitely the white chinchilla straight jacket but only because this one literally made me gasp. I loved the corset made of rope, the bloody shower curtain trench dress and the slashed flesh dress. And how awesome were the super-long Anna May Wong nails and the peroxide teased housewife hair. The ‘psycho chic’ show was killer. But don’t take my word for it, check out the show for yourself.

Dear Valentine,

Chicken Waffles Valentine

You know me well enough to realize that the way to my heart is through the taste buds, that eating is not simply to satisfy hunger but rather like a sensory repertoire of spices… from the peppery nuances of coriander to the sweet fragrance of thyme each one plays a part in the epicurean play of a gastronome’s life. I can see how well you understand this when I received this nearly perfect Valentine (of course, true perfection would have been accompanied by the real deal) but there’s still time.

You can find this and other tasty designs on Paperless Post. Your romantic overture can be delivered digitally or the 20th century way with its paper counterpart.

Have a Happy Chicken & Waffle Valentine’s Day!
